Step-cut center, tapered baguettes, open gallery
A large step-cut diamond flanked by tapered baguettes over an open gallery. Architectural, almost entirely without ornament, and therefore completely dependent on the clarity of the center stone.
Step cuts hide nothing. There is no brilliant faceting to break up an inclusion, which is why a stone like this is chosen on the report and on the table, in daylight, rather than under a showroom spotlight.
The gallery is left open so light passes under the center stone. It is a harder setting to build and a considerably better one to look through.

Why there are no numbers on this page
This ring was photographed on a workbench, and the bench pad and tools were cropped out. No document was legible in the frame, so nothing numeric is published — including the shape family, which we describe as a step cut rather than guessing between emerald and Asscher.
Choosing a step cut
For step cuts we push clients up in clarity and down in carat rather than the reverse. It is the one shape where the grade is genuinely visible to the naked eye, and we would rather you heard that from us first.
